Acetic Acid – What is acetic acid used for?

In ancient times, alchemists used vinegar to produce dyes. In 1847, the Germans successfully synthesized Acetic Acid from inorganic substances, thereby starting a chemical product industry up to 5 million tons per year.

– In food: Acetic Acid – Acetic acid (according to food standards approved for use in the EU, USA, Australia, New Zealand…) is used under food additive code E260 as an acidity regulator. and as an indispensable condiment.

- In industry: the product is widely used in many industries such as: industry producing colorants, organic solvents (ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, cellulose, acetate, acetone, ...). Synthetic plastics, silk fibers, PVA resins.

The product is also a reactant used to produce chemical compounds. The largest individual uses are for the production of vinyl acetate momoner, followed by the production of acetic anhydride and esters. The amount of acetic acid used to produce vinegar is very small compared to the above.

A new use from this chemical is to produce the chemical Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA), which is an efficient and highly biodegradable de-icing agent. But this chemical has had limited use in the past, because it costs many times more than the application of salt. Today, manufacturers have announced a new method to produce acetic acid from cheese-making by-products, in order to reduce the cost of producing the chemical Calcium magnesium acetate.
